I have used my iPhone (3GS - 32GB) on both O2 and Vodafone as it is an unlocked unit. It has been dramatically quicker on Vodafone for browsing and downloads over their 3G network. I have also noticed that whilst quicker to establish a connection to a site it seems more consistent in maintaining that connection for longer. O2 has had major outtages and a number of calls dropped unexpectedly which I have not experienced on Vodafone. I know which network gets my vote.

How can you comparable the two and not even mention e-ink? The iPad's strengths are multiple: it can do color, it has a larger display, a very nice touch screen interface, and it it does lot so of other things like showing movies and surfing the web. It's basically an entertainment machine. The Kindle is an eReader for books and it does that one thing very well. People who read a lot and don't want to surf on a large touch screen device won't necessarily pay that much money (and if you add in the 3G monthly charges, it is a LOT more money; in less than a year, the fees for unlimited 3G would pay for a Kindle) for a glitzy Apple device, especially if what they're reading most are novels and nonfiction books, which don't need color or large screen.

What it boils down to is, what do you read and how much? Because if the answer is books, the lack of eyestrain, better battery life, and much cheaper price will make an e-ink reader (not just the Kindle) a better deal than an iPad.

Also note that people who prefer reading a Kindle are not necessarily tech-minded. It's simplicity and the fact that you don't need a computer to use it are a lot of its appeal.

I'm very sorry, but this is the last word I would ever use to describe the iPad. It's plainly simple not suppose to be a Phone, the iPhone does that very well I think, and it's small so you can carry it everywhere you go. And then the e-books. Don't try to tell me that it's the only useful function of the device. And if you would like a simple reading device, buy a Kindle and be happy with it, because this thing does a lot more than that. The iPad is a companion device, a gateway to internet, movies, music AND e-books. And if you still can't see a use for it in your life, then perhaps try using your imagination just a little bit, you know the thing that creates dragons and monsters in your mind. And when you finally find a good use for one, go to the store, line up, and buy yourself two.

It's not going to replace ebook readers (most definately not an upgrade) though as it doesn't have anything to rival e-ink which is a much more readable technology. This is going to be like reading a book on any other oled or lcd screen where your eyes are going to object past 10 or 11 pages. If this type of device was going to work then tablets would have taken off years ago.
This is just going to be one massive fail. Shame as the iphone and ipod touch were really cool and really did change the market.

Why do we want Windows Mobile 7, when we don't know what it is yet?

Why will it be better than existing platforms, such as Android? Why would we stake our hopes in something we don't know, or have any idea about its features, except that it carries the Microsoft brand name.

The HTC HD2 is not a business phone. Business users will find that most of the apps they need don't work on the HD2's capacitive screen. Most Windows Mobile apps were designed for a stylus pen.

You could give this to the children to surf the net with, but they'd probably have much more fun with an Android phone or an iPhone.

The coming arrival of Windows Mobile 7 will actually kill Windows Phones, rather than save it.

When we see that Windows Mobile 7 is not selling, and failing in the market, we then know that Microsoft will not have another plan up its sleeve. It will make the demise of Windows Mobile more obvious to everyone.

Microsoft should have made this transition many years ago, when there was little competition in the smartphone market. Now it is too late. Windows Mobile is dead, and version 7 will do nothing to save it.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about mate, the VAG was a beta test, a soft launch if you will. They changed the name because they probably realised the joke wasn't funny anymore and having had such success in the soft launch, should give it a real name.. Also, can you receive voice calls on your mobile number, over wifi? Or have you just not read what the box does before spewing your drivel all over this website? Anyway I hope you don't make a living out of getting your facts right;)

whilst i agree totally with you in your comment of why would you connect in 3G when you already have broadband and wi-fi, i have made the jump into getting one of these fantastic devices purely for the reason that in my home (for reasons no-one can explain) i cannot get a mobile signal unless im stood out in my drive, even though i live in a town with excellent reception everywhere else, so i end up having to use my land line and pay make calls, when i am already paying for them on my allowance with my mobile, so for me it is a no brainer last month i saved £47 pound alone.

The breaking of app compatibility in WM7 will be a wonderful opportunity for developers to switch platforms.

If you have to rewrite anyway, may as well jump off the Windows Mobile sinking ship, and rewrite for the growing Android market.

For those that stay behind, and rewrite, the Zune phone may be about as popular as the Zune music player was. The Zune HD failed dismally in the market, so I don't see how putting a phone in it will help.

Sony Ericsson's problem is that it can't sell phones like the X2, that are based on the unpopular Windows Mobile operating system. But the X2 will be the last Windows Mobile phone, before Sony Ericsson ditches the plagued Microsoft operating system, and switches instead to Android for the X10.

The public is rejecting Windows Mobile, in favor of the newer Android.

Yes, it is true. Microsoft's Windows Mobile phone software is ruddiest and worst designed user interface to be ever inflicted upon the suffering humanity. The cancelling of the X2 is a good thing, as it means one less Windows Phone in this world.

However, Sony Ericsson will soon release the Xperia X10, running Android, so that will be much better.

Nobody will want the X2. It was supposed to be out earlier last year. One can only speculate on why there was such a long delay. Some have said the delay was caused by Microsoft promising Windows Mobile 7, which also got delayed, leaving handset makers to make-do and put version 6.5 in handsets that were designed for version 7.

As the article said, Windows Mobile phones are going out of favor, and not popular. Their interface harks from the 1990s era of PDAs and stylus pens, when modern phones are designed for finger touch. It was previously reported that the X2 is Sony Ericsson's last phone using the Windows Mobile system, before they ditch the platform, and switch to the more popular Android.

The successor to the Xperia X2 is the Xperia X10, which is also due in late January. The X10 will be much better, as it runs the Android operating system, which includes a better touch interface, as well as free Google turn-by-turn GPS navigation.

Does anybody else think the header of this article is particularly misleading? The device may have passed through FCC with T-Mobile compatible frequencies, this doesn't confirm in anyway that T-Mobile will in fact carry this phone. Furthermore, SE is notorious for releasing carrier-less phones in the states and asking consumers to buy this phone unsubsidized and bring it to the carriers themselves....

While it's likely that T-mobile compatible phone should go to T-mobile, it is still a very fine line to cross before declaring victory.....
Please don't get people's hopes up like this.
